Johnson pond recreational trailhead is an area that is open from sunrise till sunset, I visited this area in February about 2 or 3 weeks after controlled burns had been conducted in the area “that’s why a lot of the area looks like charcoal in the photos”. The area is perfect for those individuals that love to trail run or walk as the trails are well marked by yellow paint on trees or yellow signs on trees and well maintained. I didn’t see a lot of wildlife when I was out today but that could be due to the burning in the area. If you are looking to go towards the water make a left when you enter the area and that will take you toward the pond “it’s mostly dried up”, there is a small lookout platform that overlooks the pond “be careful as the top railing is falling apart and won’t support anyone”. I got a couple of photos of birds from the platform flying over the water and a few others of birds along the trail.
I have hiked this frequently as it is close to my home. I never thought of biking here, but it would not work well. The paths are very sandy in many spots. The other caution is to either copy the loop trail to paper or take a pix of it. Also take a GPS as there are many side trails for horses that will take you off the loop. I found myself getting lost several times when I first went there. It is a nice hike.
