“FREE ESTIMATES!” are provided after an $85.00 service call. (I live about 15-minutes away). I asked the receptionist why they advertise “FREE ESTIMATES!” then charge $85 for the privilege? Her priceless reply was that “FREE ESTIMATES were only for, “ Big Jobs.” An entire quarter of my house is without power, the circuit breaker box (and breakers) need replaced. A brand new refrigerator sits, unusable. The in-floor heating system power needs disconnected with the electricity stepped down and rerouted to multiple, in-wall 110-v receptacles. If that’s not a “Big Job,” I’m not sure what is!
It is hard to find reliable service companies in Pinellas County, but their younger, more motivated employees might be known to supplement their income by doing work on the side. A homeowner is given a list of parts to buy at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware, etc.; and they complete the job. Most are looking to start their own businesses, so they work harder than they would if the were “working for the man.” . Even at half the cost (at the most), many are getting paid as much as 3-times what they’d be paid at the shop. Not that I’d do this, of course...
